Paul-Henri Nargeolet was born in Chamonix, in the French Alps, but spent his early years in Africa with his parents. He spent more than 20 years in the French Navy, becoming a Commander. He then specialised in deep submersibles and in 1987 led the first recovery expedition of the Titanic.

Nargeolet, the Director of Underwater Research for RMS Titanic, which holds the rights to the ship’s remains, began his exploration of the Titanic wreck in 1986 when he joined the French ocean research institute, Ifremer. Before his career in Ifremer, Nargeolet had served in the French navy for 22 years. During his explorations of the Titanic wreck, he brought up around 5,500 objects to the surface, including personal items belonging to the passengers such as binoculars and letters. According to Johann, the only part of the ship that Nargeolet had not explored yet was the safe room where valuables like gold and jewelry would have been kept.
Interestingly, Nargeolet’s exploration of the Titanic wreck inspired James Cameron’s 1997 film “Titanic.” Cameron, a friend of Nargeolet, was amazed by the quality of the reconstructions in the film, shot in a pool, which were inspired by images taken by the French explorer.
Currently, Nargeolet’s wife, Anne, resides in Connecticut, while his children live outside of France. Despite his achievements, Nargeolet’s recent disappearance while exploring the Titanic wreck on a tourist submersible has left many concerned for his safety.
